The ID4Africa 2025 AGM is to conclude today. Held from May 20 to 23 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the conference has gathered over 2,300 delegates from nearly every country in Africa, as well as other countries around the world, making this the largest gathering in the event’s history.
Centered on the theme of “Digital Identity at Scale: Prioritizing Use, Accelerating Impact,” the conference has emphasized actionable strategies public and private sectors can use to expand useful digital identity systems across Africa.
The success of Ethiopia’s Fayda Digital ID program has been prominently featured during the AGM, showcasing integration with 55 service providers and registration of over 15 million citizens.
During a keynote speech at the conference, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said:
As digital identity gains global traction, we are reminded that the true measure of success is not in the number of systems built, but in the lives transformed.
The conference underscored the importance of digital ID in enhancing financial inclusion. Ethiopia reported that digital payments have expanded significantly, with 86 to 90 million people using mobile devices for transactions, facilitated by the digital ID infrastructure.
Ethiopia also announced its FaydaPass digital wallet to fulfill crucial KYC needs and promote further financial inclusion in the country. Meanwhile, Ghana, Nigeria, and Kenya gave insights into revenue generation models from the national ID programs in their respective countries.
A key takeaway from the AGM was an emphasis on cross-sector collaboration and strategies to most efficiently use current technologies to address digital identity needs across Africa.
Other highlights from the AGM include the expansion of the ID4Africa Ambassadors program, which fosters regional collaboration in digital identity, and the African Digital Identity Hackathon.
The ID4Africa 2026 AGM will be held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
