Ready-made fraud risk decisioning gives growing digital businesses one clear risk level for every applicant, without building a fraud function first.

Sumsub has announced the launch of Fraud Prevention Starter Kit, ready-made fraud risk decisioning for companies growing faster than their fraud controls. Drawing on Sumsub's decade of experience in fraud prevention, it takes the signals already present in an onboarding flow and turns them into a single risk level for each applicant, with a clear next step attached: approve, step up, review, or block.

The launch responds to a shift Sumsub has tracked in its own findings. According to internal data, the global identity fraud rate eased from 2.6% to 2.2% over the past year, while sophisticated attacks combining several techniques within a single verification attempt rose 180%. As such, fraud is becoming less a volume problem than a quality one. The attempts that succeed increasingly clear identity checks, arriving with growth through new markets, campaigns and referral programmes as fake accounts, mules and multi-accounting.

Know-Your-Customer checks confirm who someone is, but identity alone does not establish whether an applicant is safe to trust. Closing that gap has traditionally required building a fraud function from scratch, a process that takes months of design, testing and tuning, along with headcount most growing businesses have yet to hire. The result is that companies are least equipped to detect fraud during the exact period when exposure is rising fastest.

One risk level from signals already in the flow
The Fraud Prevention Starter Kit collects and enriches context available during onboarding, including email and digital footprint, phone risk, IP and network indicators, device intelligence, identifiers repeated across applicants, and confirmed fraud feedback and blocklists. Signals can be gathered through existing Sumsub verification flows, WebSDK, MSDK, API, or pre-KYC integrations.

Those signals are evaluated through a pre-built risk matrix weighing individual risk factors, cross-consistency checks, device and network intelligence, applicant connections, and known fraud patterns. Each applicant returns as low, medium or high risk, and that outcome can be passed straight into downstream workflows. When new applicants share devices, contact details or other identifiers with users already confirmed as fraudulent, those connections inform later assessments.

A starting point, not a ceiling
Teams begin with predefined logic and adapt rules, thresholds and workflows as their fraud operations mature. For companies that already run a fraud function, the Starter Kit contributes additional onboarding signals and applicant context to decisions they are making today.

"Nobody gets to choose when fraud shows up. It arrives with a new market, a referral campaign or a good growth quarter, and it usually arrives before anyone has been hired to deal with it," said Andrew Novoselsky, Chief Product Officer at Sumsub. "Until now, the choice was to spend months building a fraud function or to absorb the losses while you did. We wanted a third option. The Starter Kit gives a team a working fraud decision on day one and something concrete to improve on from there, which matters because the applicant you approve today is the account someone else's stolen money moves through tomorrow."
