Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, Cooltra is a leading mobility company specializing in sustainable two-wheeled mobility services. Through its sharing vertical, the company operates across multiple European markets, providing users with convenient access to electric mopeds and e-bikes through its mobile platform.
Cooltra employs around 600 people and has built a large user base of more than 3.5 million registered users. While the company originally focused on vehicle rental, it expanded into shared mobility services in 2016 with the launch of its moped-sharing offering.
Today, Cooltra’s platform allows users to quickly register, verify their eligibility to drive, and access vehicles directly through the mobile app. As a mobility provider operating vehicles with license plates and subject to local regulatory requirements, the company places strong emphasis on verifying the identity of riders to ensure both legal compliance and safe vehicle usage across the cities where it operates.
The Challenge
As Cooltra expanded its shared mobility services, verifying riders’ identities became a critical part of its operations. Since the company rents registered vehicles, it must ensure that each user is properly identified and legally authorized to drive. In some countries where Cooltra operates, the company may also be required to provide rider information to authorities, making reliable identity verification essential for regulatory compliance.
Initially, when the sharing service launched, all user verifications were handled manually. As the platform grew and the number of registrations increased, this approach became increasingly difficult to scale. Cooltra later adopted an automated verification solution that supported document verification and face matching to streamline the onboarding process.
However, after the previous verification service was discontinued, Cooltra had to temporarily return to manual verification while searching for a new provider. At the same time, the company was working on a brand-new version of its mobile app, which meant the new verification solution had to be implemented as part of a broader product rollout.
This created an urgent need for a solution that could support automated identity verification across multiple countries, integrate smoothly into Cooltra’s new mobile app, and help restore a fast and scalable onboarding experience for riders.
Why Sumsub?
When selecting a new verification provider, Cooltra conducted a structured evaluation process to compare several vendors. The company’s priorities were clear: it needed a solution that could support operations across multiple markets, integrate easily into its mobile platform, and remain flexible enough to adapt to evolving product needs.
One of the key reasons Cooltra chose Sumsub was the platform’s ease of setup and workflow flexibility. The team needed a solution that could be implemented without unnecessary complexity and configured efficiently within their existing onboarding flow.

It was very easy for us to implement the solution. And now, whenever we need to make any modifications, we don’t need engineers to do that. We can handle it ourselves on the product side, which gives us a lot of flexibility.
International coverage for driving license verification was another important factor. Since Cooltra operates across multiple countries and requires riders to prove they are legally allowed to drive, broad document support was essential.
The team also valued Sumsub’s collaborative approach during the evaluation phase and the solution's overall cost-effectiveness.

The capability to use the solution across different platforms, the ease of setting it up, and the way the workflows are built were all important factors for us. We needed something flexible enough to fit into our app environment and simple enough to implement without adding unnecessary complexity.
The Solution
Cooltra integrated Sumsub directly into its mobile onboarding flow for individuals who want to use the company’s moped-sharing service.
During registration, riders are asked to upload images of the front and back of their documents. Sumsub’s OCR technology extracts key information, including the user’s name, date of birth, etc. The system then performs a Liveness check and compares the user’s face with the photo on the document to confirm that the person registering is the legitimate holder of the license.
The verification flow also includes duplicate checks. Sumsub helps Cooltra detect whether the same driving license or face has already been used in a previous registration, reducing the risk of duplicate accounts and other fraudulent activity.
After Sumsub’s verification step is completed, Cooltra continues the onboarding flow on its side with additional service-related checks and data collection. In some cases, users may also be routed to manual review depending on the type of driving license submitted and the legal requirements of the country where they want to ride.
The Results
Since implementing Sumsub, Cooltra has restored automated verification for its moped-sharing service. Today, every user who wants to rent a vehicle goes through this flow, helping the company verify identity and driving eligibility before granting access.
On average, the full document capture and onboarding step takes about 1.5 minutes for users who complete it, while the automated verification decision itself takes up to 2 seconds. This helps keep the process fast and straightforward for riders while ensuring the required checks are in place.
At the same time, the redesigned onboarding process has helped Cooltra improve two key performance indicators: the conversion rate from registration to the first ride, and the time it takes a new user to start their first rental after registering. While these improvements are the result of both the new verification system and a broader redesign of the registration flow, automation has played an important role in enabling a faster and more streamlined user experience.

With the redesigned onboarding flow, we saw significant improvements in both conversion rate and the time it takes a new rider to complete registration and start their first ride. Verification was an important part of that broader improvement.
By automating identity verification and integrating it directly into the app’s onboarding process, Cooltra has simplified rider registration, reduced manual work for internal teams, and maintained strong compliance with local regulations across the markets where it operates.
Future plans
Cooltra’s next focus is on strengthening the integration between its backend systems and Sumsub. One of the key priorities is improving the synchronization of verification statuses so that registration data and verification results stay fully aligned across platforms.
This will allow Cooltra’s customer service team to better understand where users may drop off during the registration process and provide more targeted support when needed.
Looking ahead, as the company expands its mobility services across European cities and rolls out new product features in its app, it is also working to make onboarding more transparent, efficient, and easier to manage, while continuing to meet the legal requirements tied to shared vehicle operations.
