How iGaming operators can combine identity, device, behavioral, and transaction signals to catch player risk at every stage of the account and keep each response proportionate

Many of the signals you need for player protection appear after onboarding. What must happen if a deposit doubles overnight, or a verified account changes device and payment method in the same week?  Each could mean fraud, financial vulnerability, or nothing at all.

A player who self-excluded last year comes back with a slightly altered name and a new payment card, on a phone your systems have never seen. If those details differ enough from the self-exclusion record, every registration check may raise no alarm whatsoever.

During European Safer Gambling Week, our experts will walk you through these cases: how to read the signals together and what a proportionate response looks like.

Speakers:
– Dr. Ekaterina Hartmann, Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA)
Moderator: Kris Galloway, Head of iGaming Product, Sumsub

What you'll learn

  • What point-in-time KYC misses, and how continuous risk assessment across registration, deposits, gameplay, and withdrawals can catch it without adding checks for players who show no risk
  • Which signals carry the most weight in ambiguous cases, such as a self-excluded player returning under altered details or one device shared by several accounts in a household
  • How to distinguish fraud, account misuse, and potential gambling harm when a single set of signals could indicate any of the three
  • What a proportionate intervention looks like, from an extra check to direct contact with the player, and how to handle false positives and legitimate edge cases
  • How safer-gambling, fraud, payments, AML, and compliance teams can share one risk view and agree who makes the call to intervene, so a player doesn't get contradictory requests from different teams
  • Where AI can support player-protection decisions, and how to keep each automated intervention explainable and auditable, with a person accountable for it

Why attend?

In many European markets, safer-gambling duties apply for the life of the account, and a regulator can ask why you intervened with one player and left another alone.

Too much monitoring has its own costs. Players start to feel watched, and three teams end up checking the same account for three different reasons.

The panel works through four cases you could face this week and closes with one recommendation from each speaker for the next 12 months.

Who should attend?

  • Safer-gambling and player-protection teams
  • Compliance and regulatory leaders at iGaming operators
  • Fraud prevention professionals
  • AML and financial crime teams
  • Payments and risk managers
  • Product and operations leaders in iGaming

Certificates
