Vietnam Plans to Link VNeID With Singapore and Laos in ASEAN Digital ID Push

Vietnam plans to connect its national digital identity app, VNeID, with Singapore’s Singpass and Laos’s LAeID under a new framework for cross-border electronic identification. The connections could later extend to other ASEAN countries.

Under Decision No. 1830/QD-TTg, signed on September 22, the first connections will be piloted at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. Border officials would use information from the participating systems to verify travelers’ identities, potentially reducing repeated declarations and document checks.

Vietnam’s public security, foreign affairs, and science and technology ministries have until October 30 to coordinate with authorities in Singapore and Laos and develop procedures for using the apps in immigration processes. Technical integration and testing are scheduled for completion by November 15.

Before the pilots begin, authorities will assess system performance, error handling, cybersecurity, and personal data protection. They will then track authentication success rates, processing times, and cases requiring manual checks, as well as gather feedback from travelers and businesses.

The results will inform a report to Vietnam’s prime minister on whether to expand the connections to other border crossings and ASEAN countries.
