The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has announced tougher enforcement measures targeting non-compliant gaming machines and illegal gambling activity, as regulators continue tightening oversight of the country’s gambling sector.

Speaking at the Bingo Association’s annual general meeting, acting chief executive Sarah Gardner said the regulator plans to intensify action against illegal land-based gambling while strengthening technical compliance requirements for licensed operators. The move forms part of the UK’s broader gambling reform agenda following the Gambling Act review.

Under new license conditions taking effect on 29 July 2026, non-remote gambling operators will be required to immediately remove gaming machines from their premises if the UKGC determines that the machines do not meet technical standards or lack the appropriate operating license. Previously, operators were often allowed to keep defective machines on-site while corrective work was carried out.

The regulator said the tougher approach is intended to speed up enforcement and reduce risks tied to unsafe or unauthorized gaming equipment. The changes follow a 2025 consultation on Gaming Machine Technical Standards, which received broad support from industry stakeholders.

The crackdown also comes amid growing concern around illegal gambling markets in the UK. Regulators and policymakers have warned that increasingly strict rules for licensed operators could unintentionally drive some users toward unregulated offshore platforms operating outside UK consumer protection and AML standards.
