Spotify has introduced a new “Verified” badge designed to help listeners distinguish human musicians from AI-generated artist profiles on its platform. The move comes as streaming services face mounting pressure over the rapid rise of synthetic music, spam uploads, and fraudulent streaming activity.
According to the BBC, artists will need to meet the authenticity signals set by Spotify to receive the badge. Those signals may include linked social media profiles, consistent listener behavior, merchandise listings, or evidence of live performances—factors intended to indicate that a real artist is behind the account.
The change lands as AI-generated music becomes harder to separate from human-made work across major platforms. For streaming services, the issue is no longer limited to copyright disputes or creative ethics. Synthetic tracks have increasingly been tied to spam distribution and playback manipulation—problems that directly affect royalty allocation and platform integrity.
For compliance and trust teams, Spotify’s move is another sign that platforms are being pushed toward stronger identity and authenticity checks.
For music platforms, as for fintech and digital marketplaces, proving that a real person is behind an account is becoming part of basic platform infrastructure rather than a secondary moderation feature.
