SEC Adds Superintelligence and Tokenized Securities to 2027 Watchlist

The SEC has named advanced AI, including “superintelligence,” and tokenized securities among its 2027 examination priorities.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has named advanced AI, including “superintelligence,” and tokenized securities among its examination priorities for fiscal year 2027.

The SEC’s Division of Examinations published its annual priorities on October 23, listing advanced technologies that could affect market operations, compliance, fraud prevention, and investor protection. The division’s work covers more than 34,000 regulated entities, including investment advisers, broker-dealers, clearing agencies, and transfer agents.

The agency will examine how firms use emerging technologies and manage the risks they create. Its priorities include operational resilience, cybersecurity, and protection of customer information, alongside the use of AI in compliance and fraud detection. The document also identifies risks associated with changing market infrastructure, specifically naming tokenization and Treasury clearing reforms.

Tokenization also appears in the section covering clearing agencies and systems governed by Regulation Systems Compliance and Integrity. Examiners will assess controls around tokenized securities and other developing technologies as part of their review of market infrastructure.

The 2027 priorities do not restore a standalone section on crypto assets, which featured in the SEC’s 2025 examination priorities but was absent from the 2026 list. Instead, tokenization is addressed as part of broader market-structure risks. The SEC said its priorities are not exhaustive and that examiners can adjust their focus as new risks and market developments emerge.

The annual priorities guide the SEC’s risk-based examinations of regulated firms. They do not create new legal requirements, but they signal where firms should expect closer scrutiny of their controls and compliance practices.
