The Royal Government of Bhutan has announced that its National Digital Identity (NDI) platform will be anchored on the Ethereum blockchain by early 2026, marking one of the first national-level digital ID systems to migrate to a public blockchain.

Developed by Druk Holdings and Investments, the NDI enables citizens to verify their identity online and access public services using cryptographically secured credentials. Bhutan first launched the system in 2023, initially relying on private and permissioned technologies such as Hyperledger Indy and Polygon. The upcoming transition to Ethereum will improve transparency, interoperability, and decentralization.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Foundation president Aya Miyaguchi visited Bhutan to discuss the rollout. Miyaguchi described the project as “a milestone for decentralized identity,” adding that Ethereum’s open network will strengthen trust in national digital systems.

Officials said the migration will preserve privacy by storing only proofs, not personal data, on-chain. Approximately 800,000 citizens are expected to utilize the upgraded platform once it is fully deployed.

Bhutan’s adoption of Ethereum aligns with its strategy to position the kingdom as a hub for green digital innovation. The country already operates renewable-powered crypto mining facilities and maintains a national crypto treasury.
