AML Odyssey: How Growing Businesses Find Their Way to Ithaca
Every business venture is its own Odyssey. Fraudsters lurk in the shadows, regulatory storms are brewing, and mythical creatures stand between our Hero and Ithaca. Follow our Odysseus on his journey. Will he make it home?
Every business venture is its own Odyssey. As a company grows, so does the challenge of managing AML compliance, meeting KYC requirements, preventing fraud, and keeping up with evolving regulations.
Meet our Hero, Odysseus: a newly appointed Head of Compliance, tasked with building an AML program that can keep pace with a rapidly growing business. His mission sounds simple and obvious: protect the company, its customers, its reputation, and help the business scale.
The road there, however, is anything but.
Follow our Hero on his journey – will he make it to Ithaca?
The siege of Troy
Entering the market is the beginning of a long battle to build a business people can trust. But success and trust need more than just a great, useful product. They also require meeting regulatory demands and putting the right AML and KYC foundations in place – the battles every growing business must face.
A strong compliance program takes time to build. The earlier you establish identity verification, customer due diligence, and risk management processes, the better prepared you are for what lies ahead.

Departure
The product launches, and the journey to Ithaca begins. Customers arrive, growth accelerates, and every new client brings an AML obligation that wasn't there yesterday.
As the customer base grows, our Hero needs reliable identity verification, risk assessment, and compliance processes that can scale with his business.

Scylla and Charybdis
He then faces a difficult trade-off. Steer too close to Scylla, and she takes a steady toll of legitimate customers – the ones who give up halfway through onboarding. Steer away from her, and the fraudsters you waved through drag the whole ship into Charybdis.
Effective AML compliance is about striking the right balance: using risk-based controls to identify suspicious activity while keeping the customer experience untroubled.
So which way does our Hero steer?

The Sirens
The Sirens know exactly what businesses want to hear and sing a seductive song about more customers, faster onboarding, quick scaling, and fewer drop-offs – if you just skip KYC.
Our Odysseus listens to this beautiful song and takes the easy route. "We'll sort out KYC later 🥱"
Everything is going well: the product is popular, customers are signing up, growth is accelerating, and nothing seems wrong. Why slow things down?
That's the trap. The longer our Hero listens to the sweet song, the harder it becomes to retrofit identity verification, AML controls, and risk management into a product that keeps getting bigger.
And then the consequences arrive.

The Cyclops
Our Hero defers an infrastructure upgrade, and the checks stay manual and fragmented. Onboarding, fraud prevention, and transaction monitoring each run on their own systems and never compare notes.
Then a new customer arrives:
Cyclops Ltd.
Purpose: Customer acquisition / account management
Status: Verified

The documents are real, the identity seems real, so the check passes.
But the customer’s behavior is suspicious. It opens accounts at machine speed, adapts when challenged, and works the gaps between controls that nobody ever connected. What looks like a single verified customer is an automated operation running hundreds of accounts from shared devices and payment instruments, invisible because no system has been looking at those accounts together.
The controls that would have caught it are exactly the ones the Hero has put off: device and behavioral signals to flag automation, network analysis to connect accounts that share infrastructure, and ongoing monitoring rather than a single check at the door.
At last, our Hero verifies who the customer is. But nobody has verified what has been acting on its behalf.
By the time the pattern surfaces, it has been running for a few months. Funds have moved through the platform and out.
The team spends the next quarter reconstructing the activity, filing reports on transactions they should have caught in real time, and answering a regulator who wants to know why no alert ever fired. The roadmap freezes, and their banking partner starts asking questions.
So our Hero’s team rebuilds the infrastructure. But then comes the sea, and it doesn't care how hard-won that was.
The wrath of Poseidon
Our Odysseus has survived the Cyclops and a wave of fraudsters, and the ship is finally back on course. The updated AML controls are working, the crew is confident, and Ithaca is in sight.
Then Poseidon makes his presence felt: a new AML regulation comes into force. Sanctions requirements change. New Travel Rule obligations emerge in the jurisdictions where the business scales. At the same time, fraudsters have already moved on to a new tactic.
The controls that worked yesterday are suddenly no longer enough.
For a growing business, regulatory compliance is a moving target. The business needs to constantly adapt its AML program as regulations, risks, and fraud typologies evolve.
You can’t beat Poseidon, as nobody beats the sea. You can only learn to sail it – so the AML policies must adapt.
